Getting started with Dex Notes

Dex Notes is a calm workspace for technical lectures. Slides, code, notes, recordings and review moments for a class all live in one place.

The basic flow

1. Create a course from Courses (or the dashboard). Only a few details are needed. The name is optional, and you can add the professor, meeting days and times, location, links and a banner later.
2. Start a lecture from the course page with New lecture or Start new lecture. Setup has three short steps: details, materials and recording.
3. Take notes during class in the lecture workspace, next to your slides and code. You can record audio, turn on live captions, and flag moments you want to come back to.
4. Review afterward. Open the lecture review to play back the recording with its transcript, or use the course Review queue to work through flagged moments.

Finding your way around

• Dashboard: your next class, recent lectures and Dex.
• Courses: every course you have created. Open one for its overview, lectures, files, assignments, notes, review queue and settings.
• Settings: appearance (light or dark), lecture defaults, storage usage, and data controls for export and deletion.
• Search: press Ctrl K (or ⌘ K on Mac) from anywhere to search courses, lectures and notes.
• Help & feedback: in the top bar. It has tips and a feedback box you can copy into a message to your administrator.

Dex

Dex is the small companion in the corner of the app. You can ask him questions in his chat box. What he knows depends on where you are:

• In a lecture, he answers about that lecture.
• On a course page, he answers about the course.
• Anywhere else, he answers questions about how to use Dex Notes, using these help pages.

The pill above his chat shows what he's answering about. Use it to switch: in a lecture you can ask about the whole course or get help instead. In a lecture, a short line next to it says what Dex can read: how many documents and code files, and whether he has live captions, the transcript, or no transcript. His answers cite their sources with small numbers. The source list under an answer links to the exact slide deck, code lines or moment in the recording.

While a lecture is recording, Dex can only follow along if Live captions are on. Without them he can still answer from your slides, code and notes, but not from what's being said. After the recording, he reads the final transcript once it's processed.
